Thanks everyone!

Kevin & Stephen, Chopper sez thanks! They really were quite good -- like a southern food, gravy-covered version of steamed humbow. :-)

Kitchenmage, I'm glad you forwarded that article -- it's a powerful one, isn't it?

Amy, you're most welcome!

Shauna, thank you. I wrote that line in a hopeful mood, I think, as many times I don't have much faith that truly selfish people can ever learn compassion. I agree on too much protective coating. Well said.

Thank you for your post. Beautiful and eloquent. The food looks great too, but that was actually not what intrigued me most. I loved this line: "...the damaged souls of the selfish." I wrote about this on my blog too, how some people really only seem capable of thinking about themselves. I've been made raw by all this, and thank goodness for it. We walk around with too much protective coating, most of the time. Thanks.

Thanks so much for this! I just found out about the N.O.-themed Paper Chef event, and I think it's wonderful. This looks delicious.

Had to come back and thank you for the non-food links in this post. I've forwarded the article on being poor to many friends, many of whom have written back to say how moved they were. I am only partway through the comments, but OMG does it ever bring back memories, luckily relatively few for me, but still...
